Math lessons in New Westminster and Coqiutlam

Teach your child thinking outside the box! When they see a standard problem they solve it easily, but any deviation from a familiar pattern causes frustration. That's one of the most common situations in learing math at school, because kids don't train their brain HOW to think. We'll try to help overcome this.

Our course focuses on understanding and choosing a right strategy to solve this or that logical puzzle. Problems and questions we're solving at the class are based on materials from Kangaroo and Caribou math contests.

The Caribou Mathematics Competition is a world wide online contest that is held six times throughout the school year. Each of these days, five contests are offered, one for each of the grade levels 3/4, 5/6, 7/8, 9/10 and 11/12. The goals of this contest are to improve student's problem solving techniques by providing a wide variety of challenging math activities, to show that mathematical puzzles can be fun and to teach kids thinking outside the box.

Mathematical Kangaroo is an international mathematical competition where over 50 countries are represented. There are twelve levels of participation, ranging from grade 1 to grade 12. The competition is held annually on the third Thursday of March. According to the organizers, the key competence tested by Mathematical Kangaroo is logical combination, not just pure knowledge of formulas. It is the largest competition for school students in the world, with over 5 million participants from 47 countries in 2009, and 6 million by 2014.

Lessons will start with mental math warm up. Then students will work on questions independently. Each question will be followed by a discussion and explanation of different solution options. The more we practice the more difficult and complicated problems are offered during the lesson as well as throughout the course. Ultimately, supporting the students to develop confidence in their problem solving skills. All questions and problems taken from the tests.

STEAM education integrates subjects in ways that connects disciplines and relates them to each other. STEM helps to develop creative, investigative and analytical set of skills, along with critical thinking and problem solving abilities, that students can use in all areas of their lives.

What is a STEM Challenge? It’s a project that gets kids to explore, design, test, repeat in science, technology, engineering or math.

Examples of STEM activities:

  • Homemade catapults (Engineering)
  • Homemade musical instruments (Engineering)
  • Candy Chromatography (Science)
  • Build a Volcano (Science)
  • Cardboard robotic arm (Engineering)
  • DIY kaleidoscope (Engineering)

During most of our classes students will follow the scientific approach. The presentation of relevant scientific information will be followed by discussion and construction of a hypothesis. Later the proposed hypothesis will be tested by performing an experiment. Lastly, results will be discussed a conclusion will be finalized.
